John and Jane Mahoney’s new home in Rutland, Vermont has it all: timber frame, vaulted ceilings magnificent windows, beautiful views and–the icing on the cake–American Clay in every room. After learning about American Clay through their son/builder, Henry Mahoney, who used to live in Albuquerque and who was familiar with the product, the Mahoney’s decided shortly thereafter that American Clay was exactly what they wanted. Using a total of seven colors–including Napa Olive, Sugarloaf White, Verde Valley, Sulphur Springs, Acacia and Oyster Bay–the approximately 2,300 square foot home displays its clay like artwork.

With such an array of colors, coupled with the fact that all three plasters were applied–Loma, Porcelina and Marittimo–the home could easily be a showroom, demonstrating the versatility of American Clay.

The home’s 6,768 square feet of plastered walls were no small project for first time applicator John Fitzgerald. Having never before applied American Clay, Fitzgerald, from BMM Drywall, learned the ins and outs of American Clay through Lisa Teague’s classes in New Hampshire. Fitzgerald used the Dos Manos application system throughout the home and a hard-troweled finish was used on the Porcelina walls while the Loma walls were either hard-troweled or sponged.

“The Mahoney’s was the easiest and prettiest house I’ve done,” says Fitzgerald, with over 25 years of plastering experience. Overall, he found the entire process to be very user-friendly.
